Dr. Kurthy was a featured presenter/lecturer at the First Annual Biolase Waterlase Laser Users Symposium. The Waterlase Laser is the only 'water activating' laser in the world, which means it can safely and comfortably remove tooth decay (cavities) often without the need of a needle or drill. In 2001 there are only 300 Waterlase Lasers in the entire world, and these cutting-edge dentist users of this laser came from all parts of the world to attend this meeting. Dr. Kurthy had the great honor of being a featured lecturer at this historic meeting.

In an ongoing effort to support patients’ rights in disputes with insurance carriers, Dr. Kurthy was successful in causing Blue Cross of California to modify the wording of their Remarks Codes (accompanying insurance benefit payments) to more accurately represent the logic of their policies and conform to the American Dental Association's Code on Dental Procedures and Nomenclature.

Touch Briefings is a new annual scientific journal presenting editorials on the state of the art of all areas of dentistry in the given year in the United States. Development and clinical study of 'Walking Forward', an occlusal adjustment technique to close unwanted interproximal spaces that sometimes open between first and second molars -- especially after new crown fabrication. This technique now provides the dentist with a simple adjustment technique to correct the problem, whereas previously the standard treatment was placement/replacement of a crown or filling.

Clinical study of a 'full crown' adaptation of the Bonded Porcelain Veneer Technique, currently referred to as "Bonded Porcelain Jackets". Dr. Kurthy was one of the originators of this technique, which has become, along with the Bonded Porcelain Veneer Technique, one of the most popular techniques in the world for cosmetic enhancement of the smile.

Clinical studies expanding the Double Bite Laminar Impression Technique utilizing an ultra-low viscosity wash (Mach II) injected under hydraulic pressure, having a set hardness of 92 durometers -- the wash lamination acting as internal rigid support of the impression. Impact: increased patient comfort by prevention of the gag response and accelerating the speed of the impression to less than 60 seconds; and accuracy enhancement of a highly efficient, comfortable, and rapid crown/ bridge impression technique. Currently, this impression technique has become one of the most popular in the United States.

Development and clinical studies of composite resin veneering over existing intact posterior amalgam restorations (silver fillings) utilizing a 4-META-based dentin/metal bonding agent and a highly wear-resistant composite resin with a new organic filler trimethalol-propane-trimethacrylate (TMPT). Impact: lower cost/low pulpal trauma, cosmetic enhancement of dark fillings, and reduction of amalgam mercury release from occlusal wear.

Clinical studies of a new self-curing, addition-reaction silicone for chairside use as a long-term soft lining for removable prostheses. Impact: use as an interim treatment after implant exposure and placement of healing abutments. Treatment applies to cases where one or more implants have failed to integrate and bone grafting/new implant placement is necessary prior to definitive implant prosthesis fabrication. Long healing abutments are utilized with the soft, durable silicone lining for enhanced retention of the removable prosthesis.

Development and clinical studies of a modified home bleaching tray fabrication technique. Modification enhances vacuum force and time inside the stone model during vacuum 'suck-down' of the bleaching tray material. Modification in technique allows a significantly better-fitting bleaching mouthguard, with precise fit/seal at the gingival margin, therefore, greatly slowing the loss of bleaching gel from the tray and maintenance of the necessary time/concentration of carbamide peroxide to achieve ideal whitening results (as described by Clinical Reasearh Associates' publication)

Clinical studies of a new, easy-to-use, light-cured 4-META-based, self-prime dentin bonding system that does not require acid etching of dentin before its use. Mechanism: material penetrates smear layers and hybridizes with the underlying dentin. Material seals dentinal tubules and decreases post-operative sensitivity. It is suitable for use with all currently available composite resins.

Clinical studies of use of a new hydrokinetic hard/soft tissue laser for debridement of periodontal osseous lesions during bone regeneration surgery utilizing enamel matrix protein therapy along with combination bone grafting with DFDBA and low density resorbable hydroxyapatite granules mixed with enamel matrix proteins.

Development and clinical studies of a modified custom professional bleaching tray teeth whitening technique for patients with acute sensitivity to professional carbamide peroxide bleaching products. Technique involves daily utilization of a new low abrasive dentifrice containing 10% carbamide peroxide daily with tooth brushing, followed by application of dentifrice in bleaching trays, worn for only ten minutes (usually while showering). Overall treatment time is extended, however short daily wearing time prevents sensitivity reactions, and the lower cost of the dentifrice (compared to professional whitening gel) makes this technique financially practical over time.

Development and clinical studies of a new treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity (sensitive teeth). Technique involves utilization of a self etching (SE) dentinal bonding agent with significant desensitizing properties. The bonding agent penetrates the dentinal tubules, thus occluding the tubules. A composite sealer is then placed over the surface for durability/longevity of the desensitizing treatment.

Clinical studies of a technique to eliminate intraoperative radiographs during endodontic therapy, while enhancing the accuracy of canal measurements. Technique utilizes a 'new generation' all-fluids electronic apex locator.

No other technique has ever been able to accomplish this.
