Your gums are a huge part of your smile. In fact, gum appearance
can make or break a great smile. I’ve been a pioneer in the
area of cosmetic gum lifts for about 25 years, and have been involved
in bringing this wonderful technique to the attention of dentists and
patients through lectures, articles and I’ve discussed the technique
in one of the books I’ve published for dentists. Gum lifts used
to be involved. Now the process is simple thanks to the use of
our lasers.
This patient simply hated his smile. He complained that his teeth
were not only worn and chipped, but much too small, with spaces between
them. We easily lifted the gums with the laser, and were able to
create the smile he wanted with large full teeth. He said that
at first all the guys at work were teasing him about getting his smile
done, but that after they saw it, they all wanted the same.
The following teenage patient wanted a great smile. She didn’t
really understand how much of a negative impact her excessive gums played
in her smile. Before placing her porcelain veneers, we performed
a gum lift. If we’d not utilized the gum lift technique,
we could never have given her the gorgeous smile she now has.

In this next case, look closely at the “before” photo. Notice
how much overbite this patient had (see his lower teeth behind his upper
teeth.). We needed to make his teeth longer and wider, but if
we had simply done this, his teeth would have been far too long and his
overbite would have been severe. Instead, we created the longer
teeth by utilizing the gum lift procedure. After the gum lift,
we placed porcelain on his upper front four teeth, and you will notice
that the biting edge of these porcelain coverings are no longer than
he had originally (compare the length before and after to his “eye” teeth). The
fact is that if we had simply lengthened the teeth by making them longer,
he would have had a “Bucky Beaver” smile. Instead,
he ended up with a smile that is simply a knock-out!

In the next case, this patient not only had unattractive spaces between
her teeth that she simply hated, but she showed far too much gums. By
lifting the gums, which was an incredibly easy and simple procedure,
this allowed us to give her those beautifully contoured porcelain veneers.
Just imagine the difference in her confidence when flashing a big smile
now!
